Home is not Here - TEN Countdown #8

I recently wrote a blog post called Moving Home about my recent move of my parents and I into one home together. Home is such a part of our culture as humans. We long for a place, even a small place, in our vast world, we can call our own, an address that cements our name on this earth.

Home in this world is temporary though. Even if we live in a place for a really long time, “home” changes. Whether we need to paint inside or outside, or make repairs, it’s always undergoing change. Our address may not change, but home does. Even the people in a home may change, age, health, or even family and friends shift and adjust, meaning the people of a home change.

There is, however, one place that is home and will remain home, our eternal home in Heaven with the Lord. When I think of home, the Lord always comforts and reminds me of John 14:1-2, “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?” It’s extraordinary to consider that for believers, right now, God has a place that has your name on it, an eternal place for you crafted by God Himself.

In my storm, I longed to be in Heaven. At the time I wasn’t sure how many years were left. I was initially given a five year prognosis, then later on an undefined one. Heaven was a win-win, the pains of this world were over, I got to be with Christ, and am finally home. There is purpose and meaning in our homes on earth and great grace from God in our homes with Him.

As home changes on this earth, God leaves us a promise in Isaiah 32:18, “My people will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.” I will take a hut in Heaven over the largest, most expensive, most beautiful home our world could build.
